A Purchase and A Poem

I bought a lawn-mower today…check out those blades!

Here is a poem to go with a lawn mower, written by my son Joe (age 15)

bermuda

Green Bermuda, Rangy, unkempt
thicker than Belize.
Rumbling machine, Hot, half spun blades,
coughing black pollution.

A cloudless, torrid summer sky
will see ferocious battle.
Valentine prepares pink lemonade, hair pulled up,
cheeks pomegranate red from heat.

Children playing, splashing and racing
in the above ground pool.
I release the sunflower seeds, masterfully cracked,
by the thirties from my mouth.

More antagonized with every failed
attempt to start the mower.
Chuckling Valentine appears with drinks:
is there any gas?

I look at her with arrogant eyebrows
and open up the tank-
Empty echoes the merciless jab at my
manhood.

Awareness: Watch Out for Cyclists

As a cyclist I am always appreciative of people who are aware of me in a good way.  This is also a good methaphor for Bible study.  We often miss the point of many passages because our attention is constantly drawn to one aspect of the passage, unaware of the dancing bear.

The Job

I laughed, but this has a sarcasm about it that makes a powerful human point.

Oprah & Eckhart – Oprah’s Beliefs

Apparently God has no say in what God thinks…we each define it for ourselves. This removal of any personality in God defaults into a pantheistic spiritualism: we all can create our godness, because everything is god and connecting to this god is entirely personal and individual. Ultimately connecting with god is no different than knowing myself.

The anti-ideology approach is an interesting one: beliefs are bad, I mean all beliefs except the ones I create and oh, those aren’t beliefs because all beliefs are bad, except the ones I hold…Can this be more obtuse.

Why is Oprah an expert on “spirituality”?  We are so attracted to personality and celebrity that we will listen to actors for advice on everything from politics to religion.  Pathetic.

Scripture Reading for Saturday April 5

At NCC we supply Scripture reading for the week in preparation for the weekly message on Sunday. Today’s reading:

Luke 21:5-24

Tomorrow we will begin our series on the Olivet Discourse.  You can actually begin your reading back in Luke 20:41 as we will finish up last weeks sermon and begin the Discourse tomorrow.  Don’t expect the Left Behind series redo, the passage is not about us.

Scripture Reading for Friday April 4

At NCC we supply Scripture reading for the week in preparation for the weekly message on Sunday. Today’s reading:

Luke 11; 19:28-48

The Olivet Discourse is Jesus’ last major conversation with his disciples, and most of the time it is dealt with as if it were a stand alone passage.  Any passage of Scripture must be read in its immediate context.  Luke gives us important information in these passages directly related to Jesus message on the mount of Olives.

Try out this great new…

Try out this great new service called Jott at Jott.com. You can call a number and have your spoken note transcribe to an email and instant message and even to your blog. In fact this blog post is transcribed over Jott. Try it out, it’s free. listen

Powered by Jott

Jott is truly cool…the above was transcribed by Jott…the awkwardness is the way I worded the message. The word “transcribe” in the second sentence has to do with my lack of articulation. Otherwise it is perfect. You can even connect Jott with your Google Calendar and have it put appointments on your calendar by phone. It is much easier than writing things down when you are driving.

Scripture Reading for Wednesday April 2

At NCC we supply Scripture reading for the week in preparation for the weekly message on Sunday. Today’s reading:

Daniel 7-9

Daniel’s Vision in chapters 7-9 gives some critical Old Testament background to the Olivet Discourse that we will begin looking at this Sunday from Luke’s gospel.
